TREATMENTS
What is a root canal treatment?
A root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage to the pulp (the innermost part) of a tooth. The dental pulp consists of connective tissue, nerves and blood supply and extends to the tooth roots.
During a root canal procedure, the dentist or endodontist (a dentist specializing in root canal treatments) removes the infected or damaged pulp, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, and then fills and seals the space with a special material.Additionally, the crown of the tooth used for chewing purposes can be replaced if necessary.
When is root canal treatment needed?
A root canal procedure can save a highly infected or broken tooth. The tooth may have gotten infected or damaged due to decay, repetitive dental procedures, wear and tear, gum disease, broken fillings, or a trauma to the tooth.
It's essential to note that not all cases of tooth sensitivity or discomfort automatically require a root canal. A thorough examination by a dentist, often involving X-rays, is necessary to determine the cause of the symptoms and whether a root canal is the appropriate treatment.
If you experience any persistent tooth pain, sensitivity, or other symptoms, it's crucial to seek prompt dental attention. Early intervention can help prevent the progression of dental issues and may reduce the need for more extensive treatments like root canals.
